Nene Macdonald will to head to Townsville for next season, having agreed to a three-year deal with North Queensland.
Macdonald, who was born in Port Morseby and raised in Cairns, committed himself to the Dragons six weeks ago.
The flying winger said in an interview with NRL.com:
“I really want to stay here and it looks like I will be staying a bit longer so we will just see what happens,” Macdonald said.
“I have still got next year here anyway and I have built a good relationship here – a real good base. I like it here, the boys are really close and I am really enjoying being at the Dragons.”‘
Macdonald’s manager has managed to obtain a release in a major coup that will see a significant pay rise.
He will thrive on his opportunity in Queensland, joining an impressive back-line that boasts former Dally M winner Ben Barba and premiership-winning hero Kyle Feldt.
Cowboys coach Paul Green spoke of Macdonald with high regard:
“He’s a North Queensland kid and we like North Queenslanders representing this region,” Green said.
“Nene is going to offer plenty of depth to our backline and had a fantastic year for the Dragons.
“I know him on a personal level after coaching him in the under 20s at the Roosters and am confident he will be a good cultural fit for our club as well.”
